Baptisms and Transfers – 20 July 2025
We baptised and welcomed two new members at our 20 July service – Bennett Chiam and Tymothy Lim. Members of GBC had voted to receive them and one other, Low Pui Ngai, by transfer at the Members’ Meeting on 13 May.
Pastor Andrew explained that baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is an act of obedience to the commands of Jesus, who also set an example for all of us. The act of baptism is symbolic and does not save. We are Christians not because we have been baptised; we are baptised because we have been saved and want to walk in obedience to Christ.
In Romans 6:3-4, we read, “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” The act of baptism portrays our death in the death of Christ, and our newness of life in Christ.
As Bennett and Tymothy shared their testimonies, we caught a glimpse of what it means to be united with Christ in His death, raised to newness of life in Him and walking in obedience to God.
Bennett shared honestly about how he trusted Christ as a teenager but put off baptism as he struggled to obey God. He testified to God’s provision and faithfulness over the years, through the ups and downs of life. He is getting baptised today in obedience to God’s commands:
I have decided that I no longer want to take God's love for me for granted and take the step to come to obedience to God. Using baptism as a constant reminder to myself that I am forgiven and belong to God because of my faith in Jesus. I want to renew, continue to grow in my faith and hopefully I can be a living testimony for God and bring my wife to Christ one day.
Tymothy shared how at one point in life, he felt empty as he pursued the things of the world. God used Scripture to convict him:
At some point, I read Ecclesiastes, which told me that these worldly things were all vanity. It says in Ecclesiastes 1:2 "Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity." After reading this, I decided to put my trust in Jesus as Lord and Saviour. I decided to learn to keep His commandments and repent. I also decided to trust Him for forgiveness for all my sins. It helped that my Dad and Mum consistently set a good example for me and had been praying for me. My relationship with Jesus, my Lord and Saviour, is of eternal value to me, as compared to all the other worldly things I had previously been pursuing.
At the end of the service, Bennett and Tymothy who were baptised, as well as Pui Ngai who joined by transfer were presented to and welcomed by the congregation. GBC members also warmly welcomed them and got to know them after the service. It was also encouraging as those who were baptised also invited friends and family members to witness their baptism.
