Sermon Schedule — Revelation 1-3: Listen to the Lord — Jesus speaks to His Church

If Jesus attended Grace Baptist Church, what would he have to say about us? Would He hear His word faithfully preached and taught? Would He witness sacrificial acts of love and service? Would He be encouraged by His disciples becoming more like Him? Would He be heartened to see church members united and persevering in the faith?

Or, would Jesus encounter cold hearts or worldly complacency and compromise? Would he be concerned about his followers’ faltering faith? Would He find His word neglected or disregarded?

In Revelation 1-3, the Lord Jesus speaks to seven churches in Asia Minor. The glorious Son of Man is present with his people. He is deeply concerned about how his Bride, the church, is doing in a fallen and hostile world. These chapters represent Jesus’ assessment of the health of his church. He observes the good, and points out the bad. Jesus encourages the faithful to press on. He admonishes the wayward to repent.

The churches must listen to their Lord, for that is the way to true joy and final glory. Indeed, the whole of Revelation was written for the benefit of God’s people throughout the ages in different situations, facing various trials and temptations. We are called to hear and to keep the words of our Lord. “Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and who keep what is written in it, for the time is near. (Rev 1:3)”

The Lord Jesus speaks to us today with the same urgency as he did to the seven churches. He urges us to hold fast to his gospel with patient endurance, so that we might share in his victory in the end. Therefore, we must listen to the Lord. He is sanctifying us through his word, in order to present the church to himself in splendour, holy and without blemish. “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” (Rev. 2:7)

What would our Lord have to say about Grace Baptist Church? May He find us faithful. May He find us listening to Him.
