Reading Proverbs Together

The Wednesday Bible Study (WBS) is a midweek Bible Study and this year, they spent some months reading Proverbs 1-9 together. Thia Zhang Jie joined them recently, and shares what he learnt from reading Proverbs.

We kicked off 2026 by diving into the book of Proverbs, covering chapters 1–9 during the first quarter. Since joining WBS in January, I have found the experience to be immensely rewarding.

The Call of Wisdom

Throughout these opening chapters, King Solomon weaves several recurring themes that serve as a roadmap for a God-honoring life. Some key takeaways for me include:

  • The Foundation: The fear of the Lord is the true beginning of wisdom.

  • The Protection: Wisdom actively calls out to us; she offers life and acts as a shield against sin.

  • The Divine Connection: Wisdom allows us to form a covenant with God and was present with Him during the creation of the world.

  • The Warning: We are urged to stay away from adultery and the "forbidden woman," paths that lead only to death.

  • The Choice: We are warned not to "play with fire." We must flee temptation rather than being like the foolish young man.

  • The Ultimate Invitation: Both Wisdom and Folly are calling out to us. Choosing the former leads to life, while the latter leads to destruction.

Solomon repeatedly reminds us to "hang" Wisdom around our necks and wear it like a garland upon our heads, for it is more precious than gold, silver, or any earthly treasure.

Growth Through Fellowship

As a believer still "finding my feet" in Christ, studying these truths alongside more mature brothers has been invaluable. The diversity of age groups and backgrounds in our group provides a rich tapestry of viewpoints, offering great fodder for deep discussion and mutual learning.

Beyond the text, WBS provides a vital space for fellowship. It allows us to share our struggles and pray for one another, strengthening our bonds as a community.

A Mid-Week Recharge

As Matthew aptly noted, the week-long gap between Sunday sermons can often feel a little too long. WBS serves as a "mid-week recharge," refilling us with God’s Word and grounding us before Sunday arrives. These sessions remind me that, as a follower of Christ, I must continuously seek His wisdom to navigate life's temptations and difficulties.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with WBS so far, and I strongly encourage anyone looking to deepen their faith to join us in studying God’s Word together!

WBS will be reading James in the second half of 2026. Find out more about WBS here and write to us at info@gracebaptistchurch.sg if you are interested to join!
