Reminders from Sunflowers and the Starfruit (Jn 8)
The plants around us remind us that God created the world and is still in control. Emily Seck shares how the sunflower and starfruit influenced her artwork, and how these plants can be visual reminders to turn to Jesus, who is the light of the world.
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
(John 8:12)
I created this artwork a couple of years ago, but the verse behind it has continued to be a reminder in my life, especially in this season. I often feel pulled in many directions as I juggle my creative work as an artist, caring for my two young sons, honouring my marriage, and nurturing relationships with my parents and church family. The weight of wanting to do everything with excellence can feel overwhelming at times.
In those moments, this verse becomes precious to me. Just as the sunflower turns toward the sun for light, I am reminded to keep turning toward Christ. He is the one who brings clarity when I struggle to balance my callings. He is the one who shows me what truly matters when I am tempted to chase after success, recognition, or even my expectations.
The starfruit, with its star-shaped form, reminds me that His light is not only a guide for the big decisions, but also for the small, daily choices: how I discipline my children with love, how I show kindness to my husband, how I honour my leaders, how I create with integrity. Without His light, I stumble and strive in my strength. But when I look to Him, I find freedom, truth, and peace that is worth far more than anything fleeting in this world.
Recently, in church, we have been studying Ecclesiastes, which reminds us that there is a time and season for everything under the sun. Some seasons are filled with joy, others with sorrow, but through them all, Jesus remains the true light of the world. He gives meaning where life feels meaningless, and He guides our steps when we cannot see clearly.
My prayer is that this artwork will encourage you, as it continues to encourage me, to keep looking to Jesus. He is the light who brings clarity, purpose, and hope in every season, and as we keep our eyes on Him, He will guide us into what truly lasts.
