The Morning Glory and John 10
Emily Seck shares how the morning glory, which tends to grow around doorways, reminds her of Jesus’ words and how He is the one through whom we find salvation and eternal life.
“I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.”
(John 10:9)
This artwork, featuring the morning glory, was inspired by the plant's tendency to often grow around doorways. It made me think of Jesus’ words, “I am the door,” and how He is the one through whom we find salvation and eternal life.
This verse serves as a reminder that in Christ, we have the opportunity for a fresh start. His mercies are new every morning. Though our sins may have consequences, Jesus offers forgiveness when we turn to Him. He allows us to begin again, to be cleansed, and to experience the freedom only He can offer. This has been such a comfort, helping me release past guilt and bitterness and embrace the restoration that comes through Him.
When Jesus talks about finding pasture, I imagine the eternal hope He promises. I am reminded of the hymn On Jordan’s Stormy Banks I Stand, one that’s especially meaningful to our church. We sang it together during the Reformation concert a couple of years ago, and it’s become a cherished song for many of us. It paints a picture of the promised land in Revelation—a place where there are no more tears, no more pain. In a world that’s filled with grief, suffering, and loss, how reassuring it is to know that our Good Shepherd will lead us to this beautiful pasture.
As we dive into Ecclesiastes in church, we are reminded of how fleeting life is and how we can’t control the seasons we face. But through Jesus, the door, we find peace and security, even when life feels uncertain. In a world that often chases after progress, material success, or the pursuit of youth, it’s Jesus who shows us what truly brings lasting peace and clarity—truths that never change, no matter how much the world shifts around us.
My prayer is that this artwork will encourage you, as it continues to encourage me, to keep turning to Jesus. He is the door that offers forgiveness, freedom, and hope. As we look to Him, may we find the clarity and rest that He gives and look forward to the eternal pasture He promises.
