The Balsam Plant and the Truth that Frees (Jn 8)

Emily Seck reflects on how the Balsam plant reminded her of Jesus’ teaching in John 8:31-32 that His teachings show us the truth, and the truth sets us free.

Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
(John 8:31–32)

This month’s artwork features the Balsam plant (Impatiens balsamina) — a humble yet fascinating plant that takes me back to my primary school days. I remember planting it for a science project, watching it sprout, flower, and eventually form seed pods. The moment of delight came when the pods were ready — just a gentle touch would cause them to burst open with a soft ‘pop,’ scattering seeds in all directions.

That vivid image came rushing back one Sunday, as Pastor Eugene preached in 2022, touching on this truth. The exploding seed pod suddenly became a symbol in my mind—a picture of the freedom that comes when the truth of Christ takes root in our hearts.

Jesus tells us that when we hold to His teachings, we are truly His disciples — and that His truth sets us free. Free from sin, guilt, and shame. Free from the fear of rejection. Free to live boldly for Him, and free to share the good news with others.

This year’s church camp reminded us what it means to be a missional church — to carry the gospel wherever we are, whether across the world or simply across the table. And yet, stepping out in faith can feel intimidating. We may hesitate to speak the truth for fear of conflict, rejection, or misunderstanding.

But Jesus knows. He, too, faced rejection — the deepest kind. He bore it willingly, so that we could live in freedom and forgiveness, and with nothing left to prove.

The balsam’s joyful burst becomes a gentle encouragement: when we are rooted in Christ’s truth, we are released —sent out like seeds, scattered with purpose and hope. We may not always see where those seeds will land, but we can trust that the God who sends us is also the One who grows the harvest.

You may spot balsam plants growing in gardens or tucked in forgotten corners, unassuming yet powerful. The next time you see them, may they remind you of the power of truth—not just to change your life, but to overflow and touch the lives of others.

May this artwork inspire you to embrace the freedom found in Christ, and to carry His truth with courage, joy, and grace wherever you go.
