Studying God’s Word on Fridays

We recently spent some time in Ephesians together as a church, and the book paints a picture of the church living together. One important aspect of our life together is time spent around and in God’s word together. Jasmine Too shares about a group of ladies that have been meeting on Friday mornings. She shares about how she has been encouraged by the time spent together.

I began attending GBC about three years ago, and in my search for a ladies’ Bible study group, I found my way to the Friday Women’s Bible Study. We meet every Friday from 10am to 12pm, taking breaks during school and public holidays.

Our group is wonderfully diverse, made up of women ranging from their thirties to their eighties. Some are retirees, some homemakers, and others have flexible work schedules. Despite the wide age range, there is a beautiful unity among us. In fact, our differences add richness rather than division, creating a vibrant and balanced group dynamic.

From my very first session, I was struck by how open and expressive everyone was. We are, without a doubt, a “vocal” group! Yet, alongside the lively discussions is a deep sense of friendship and genuine fellowship. Even when we encounter differing views on non-doctrinal matters, we approach them with grace, agreeing to disagree without any trace of bitterness.

When I first joined, the group was studying the book of Jeremiah, a weighty and challenging introduction! Yet, the journey was made lighter through shared laughter, thoughtful discussion, and mutual encouragement. Since then, we have explored Thessalonians and Galatians, and in between, we have refreshed our hearts with selected Psalms.

We are currently studying the book of Genesis. Each week, we prepare in advance following a schedule set by our facilitator. Our preparation involves reading the passage carefully, identifying themes, noting repeated words or phrases, and structuring the text to uncover its main point and purpose.

During our Friday sessions, we bring our observations together and walk through the passage verse by verse. The discussions are often lively, sometimes even animated, but always meaningful. Unlike my previous Bible study experiences which are guided by questions and notes, this approach feels refreshingly open. It challenges me to spend more time in prayer and personal study, and in doing so, I’ve found myself engaging more deeply with God’s Word. Preparing each week has become something I truly look forward to.

The blend of different life experiences and perspectives makes every session enriching. We learn from one another, whether through shared insights or differing viewpoints. Without the structure of a study guide, we are free to immerse ourselves fully in Scripture. It is a non-intimidating, safe, and welcoming space for women of all ages who desire to grow in their understanding of God’s Word.

Beyond our study time, we stay connected through a group chat, where announcements are shared, and prayer requests are lifted up. It has become a meaningful channel for encouragement and support.

Our fellowship does not end when the study does. We often gather for lunch afterward, extending our conversations and strengthening personal bonds. In addition, we organise quarterly social activities, whether it’s going for walks, visiting museums, doing handicrafts, or enjoying games together. These moments of laughter and shared experiences deepen our friendships and allow us to appreciate one another beyond the study setting.

Being part of this group has been both a joy and a blessing. It is a place where learning, laughter, and love come together, where we grow not only in our understanding of God’s Word, but also alongside one another.
